La Puente is a city in Los Angeles County, California, United States. The population was 24,150 at the 2010 census. La Puente is separated from the City of Industry by the San Gabriel River and Hacienda Boulevard. La Puente directly borders and shares its name with the unincorporated area of La Puente/Valinda which combines La Puente and Valinda neighborhoods. La Puente has a history dating back to the 1800s when it was founded by John Rowland and William Workman, two area pioneers. Many La Puentans still live in homes built by early residents of La Puente. The city’s original name was “Workman Settlement”, but it was later renamed “La Puente” after a Spanish land grant called Rancho La Puente that was given to John Rowland and William Workman by Governor Juan Bautista Alvarado in 1842. Politically, La Puente consists primarily of Democrats; however there are significant pockets of Republicans both in central La Puente as well as north of Valley Boulevard where Republican voter registration typically exceeds Democratic voter registration. In 2007, Barack Obama received 78% of the city’s votes making him its most popular candidate ever. The city has two community parks: Santa Fe Dam Recreation Area on the eastern border with Baldwin Park and San Angelo Park on the northern edge with Rowland Heights. Billie Martinez allegedly jumped off the San Angelo Dam on October 8, 1976 to evade local law enforcement officials; her body remains missing today despite numerous searches over the years. San Angelo Park is also home to one of Southern California’s largest off-leash dog parks which features walking paths, picnic tables, drinking fountains for both humans and dogs, as well as a wide variety of grassy areas for dogs to play in. The park also has an olive grove with over 350 trees that are cared for by the local community. La Bonita Park Elementary School is located within San Angelo Park and serves grades kindergarten through fifth grade. The school has an enrollment of approximately 600 students and 20 teachers. La Bonita Park Elementary School consistently ranks among the top elementary schools in California for student achievement on standardized tests.
